For those who had rather skip out on the fast foods and cook at home, this pizza roll can be made to match your preference of food and eating. Both meat lovers and vegetarians can enjoy making this “all-in-one” meal – and children also enjoy participating in preparing this.
Avoid Fast Food Restaurants – Cook at Home
Cooking at home is usually healthier than eating out, and having the family sitting around the table is good for the soul. Fast food is designed to taste good – no matter how unhealthy it actually is. Some restaurant chains are now being scrutinized for producing unhealthy food and using advertisement and toys to attract children. Fast foods are often cheap and quick for the “on the go” parents, but is it really worth feeding this type of food to children?
Now to the Pizza Roll recipe.
Homemade Pizza Roll Recipe
The homemade pizza roll can be prepared in any way desired. But basically, try not to over-do the amount of ingredients used because it is possible to overload the pizza roll and it will be very messy – but still tasty.
General Ingredients for a Pizza Roll
This pizza roll can be made any way desired. The general ingredients are typically:
- Hand rolled dough or store bought pizza dough in the can
- Pizza or spaghetti sauce of your choice
- Cheese of your choice
- Bell Pepper - Green and/or Red
- Onions
- Mushrooms
- Minced Garlic
- Lean Ground Beef
- Black Pepper
Your ingredients can vary that those listed above, but the procedure for making the pizza roll is the same regardless of which ingredients are used. Vegetarians can substitute the ground beef for more vegetables and use pizza or spaghetti sauce which is free of meat.
Preparing and Cooking the Ingredients
Preparing the ingredients for the pizza roll is important. Proper preparation will allow the full-flavor of the ingredients to flow throughout the roll. Too, it will probably take a little practice preparing this pizza roll.
The following method is my own personal style of preparing the ingredients prior to wrapping the pizza roll - and these can be modified as needed.
- In a frying skillet, add one heaping teaspoon of minced garlic and one pound of ground beef - cook thoroughly. The ground beef should not be left in "chunks". When it is well done, drain and press any leftover grease from the skillet.
- After draining the grease from the ground beef, add about one-half of a large onion (chopped), one bell pepper (chopped), a package of sliced mushrooms (washed), and lightly sprinkle with black pepper to taste. Simmer these ingredients at least ten minutes along with the ground beef to allow the flavors to spread throughout the combination of ingredients.
- While these ingredients are simmering, prepare the dough (store bought or home made). The dough should be spread in a large, slightly greased cookie dough sheet and spread very thinly. Be careful not to spread it too thinly because the dough can and will tear.
- Once the dough is prepared, spread a layer of sauce across the entire surface of the dough. If you desire, you can add Oregano or other Italian seasonings directly on top of the sauce. Just be careful not to over-do it on the seasonings. Also add your cheese at this point. It is possible to add too much cheese - but in our home - the more the better.
- Now you are ready to add the cooked ingredients. Spread the ground beef and other ingredients directly on top of the sauce and dough, but try to keep the layer of ingredients thin to prevent tearing the dough while it is being rolled. If it is torn, simply "pinch" the tear back together.
- Rolling the dough can be tricky and a little practice might be needed to create a "pretty pizza roll". The dough should be pressed into a shape similar to a rectangle instead of a square. With the ingredients added, affix the long side of the dough toward you. It is this side where you will begin to roll the dough and ingredients into the pizza roll.
- Start at one side of the dough and internal ingredients, and carefully work your way to the other side in an even pattern. Imagine rolling up a floor rug or poster - the pizza roll will be rolled in the same manner.
- Once rolled, place the uncooked pizza roll back on the greased cookie sheet - and place in the oven at 350 degrees F. It will normally take around thirty minutes to thoroughly cook the dough - since this is the only ingredient in the pizza roll that is uncooked.
The sauce and other ingredients will be super hot when first removed from the oven, so allow it to cool for at least 15 minutes before cutting and eating. After it has cooled, the pizza roll can be eaten just as it is, or as I prefer, dip it in pizza or spaghetti sauce to add that extra flavor.
No matter which ingredients you use in your pizza roll, or how you decide to eat it – just remember – Enjoy!
